In a recent survey completed by investment banking firm Piper Jaffray regarding teens and their interests, some new light was shed on what the middle-class youth of America prefer for their choice of fast food. If you thought it was McDonald’s or Burger King, you were wrong.
Surprisingly, Starbucks comes in at first place even though the coffee company doesn’t really offer a lot on their menu by the way of food outside of scones, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches.
The “Taking Stock With Teens” survey included 9400 teens with the average age being 16. While Starbucks is a hot place for the youth of America to flock for meetups, it shows that food is not the main reason they visit the establishment. When compared to McDonald’s who has a lions share of the market with over 14,000 locations in the United States, Starbucks is looking good on paper, and is poised to grow even further.
Chipotle came in at number 2 spot and will be interesting to watch despite some of the recent bad publicity the company has received. This has been a surprising pick with the number of locations only amounting to currently about 1600.
Coming in at number 3 was Chick-Fil-A which we aren’t surprised about in the least. Go to just about any city during lunch and you will find any Chick-Fil-A location packed with customers. They have approximately 1800 locations across the USA.
Finally Mcdonald’s came in at 4th spot, and is likely due to just the sheer volume of locations and convenience in most cities. McDonald’s has almost 9-10 times the locations as the top 2 picks with over 14000 Gold Arch fast food chains.
The 5th spot was grabbed up by Panera Bread which is a relatively healthy way to eat. Panera has approximately 1900 locations around the USA, and has had tremendous growth over the past 5 years.
You can also see from previous years that the number 4 and 5 spot are very competitive, and that Starbucks has simply dominated in this industry.
